How do you obtain health insurance, for someone who is already in the hospital?

Hello,

My friend is already in the hospital. He was in a car accident. He does not have insurance, but I am trying to provide some kind of coverage for him. Most health insurance companies will not cover someone who is already in the hospital. And he does not qualify for Medi-Cal. So are there any other options available out there, so that he can get the surgery he needs?

   You go to an agent to get some quotes, but it won’t cover THIS accident!!

   If he was in a car accident, he needs to put a claim in under his auto policy for medical costs, or the auto policy of the person who’s car he was riding in.

   In the US, almost all commercial insurers exclude pre-existing conditions. You will not be able to get him coverage for this illness.

   If he has no insurance at all, the social workers can help him apply for “emergency Medicaid” to cover this hospitalization only. However, if this was a car accident, the auto insurance should cover the hospitalization, at least in part.

   Insurance companies are not paragons of warmth and fuzziness.

   However, an analogy would be to look for homeowners insurance when the house is on fire.

   Your friend’s unfortunate situation is all too common. It’s another reason we need some form of universal health care. Wish I had a more constructive answer.
