We found a jon boat on Craig’s List for about $1500. We’re of course going to try to get them down on the price, but I have a feeling that there may be additional expenses (insurance?) that we aren’t considering. The boat comes with the following:
5 hp Briggs & Stratton OB Motor, (used less than 5 hours) w/1 hp Sears trolling motor & new battery, Eagle fish finder, swivel seats, anchor & spare tire. Includes 1995 Long Trailer.
The only problem with the boat is that it’s older so the plywood will need to be replaced and the swivel seats (fine for now) will probably also need to go at some point.
What other expenses do we need to consider?

What you are considering buying is a pile of junk that should be dragged to the landfill. B&S motor is noisy, unreliable and hard to find parts for . Trolling motor, battery and fishfinder have a resale value of around $250, the seats, new, cost about $50-100 each, and the trailer is 15 yrs old, probably needs wheel bearings and tires. The boat will
cost at least a grand to properly repair and paint. At this moment, i have a 16′ Sylvan with a 12 year old Merc 9.9, great shape that i would ask $1250 for. Talk to friends with boats for advice, join online boating forums. Remember, with the economy the way it is, it’s a buyers market. You can do better, WAY better. Stay away from wooden boats, all they are good for is a campfire.

before you invest in a boat, take the small boat safety course. it will teach you boating safety, navigation, rules of the road, weather and the types of boats. this will help you to decide which boat is right for you.
the john boat is a simple design that is good for fishing in small lakes and very protected water. there are other boat designs that can do more that just fishing, and are more seaworthy.
because of the economy, you should have a lot of choices of boats to buy in the $1500.00 price range. My suggestion is to keep looking unless all you want to do is fish quite water.
boating in public waters requires full coast guard safety equipment this includes a life jacket fitted to each person on board, a sound producing device (horn or safety whistle) a throwable life saving device, a fire extinguisher, running lights if the boat is operated from dusk to dawn and signal flares. in addition you should also carry a first aid kit, oars or paddle, a bailing device, anchor, chain and anchor line, boat bumpers, mooring lines, extra water and food. etc. charts and or maps of the area you are boating in.
finally it’s a good idea to notify a friend or relative of the details of where you will be boating and advise them when you return.
hope this helps

“less than 5 hours” on an old motor is not good. sitting around idle is hard on machinery. Sears hasn’t sold a trolling motor since 1990 — that’s *old* for an electric trolling motor. If the whole rig was only 5 years old it might be worth $1500.
liability insurance only, shouldn’t be more than $50/year. your auto policy should cover it while it’s hitched to the car (check with your agent to be sure).
registration on the boat, depends on where you are, maybe $30-$40 a year, and the trailer, a similar amount.
scheduled maintenance should be pretty cheap, no water pump on that air-cooled engine, I don’t know much about ‘em but I expect you’ll change the gear oil every year and maybe spark plugs once in awhile.

you can glass the hull, the rest is basic “house keeping” and yes there is insurance , licenses, fuel , parking fee’s storage, tyres, and the list goes on.

-All the answers are right in ways. There are not many fans of the briggs and stratton outboard engines. Mostly because they are extremely noisy,(imagine your lawnmower at full throttle all the time) drink the gas, and they are very hard to find parts for.
-Insurance should be very cheap on a jon boat, I’ve got $12,500 full coverage on my boat and it runs about $205 a year.
-Sears has been out of the marine business since the late ninetys so the trolling motor is only worth in excess of $100.
-Briggs and Stratton 5hp engines sell for $499-$599
-As far as accessories, eagle fish finder we will say $150, trailer $250, odds and ends $100.
-I’m not sure of your jon boat, but you can buy a 14ft aluminum flat bottom jon boat new for $650 around here.
So as for the price this is about right, considering that everything is newer and in great operating shape. Replacing the plywood will be an easy job, I recommend replacing the plywood with marine grade. I always liked cutting the plywood to fit, pull it back out and coat the plywood in a layer of resin. Then re-install.
