if by bay area you mean San Fransisco, the first thing you should check is availability of marina slips......and you will probably find there is nothing available for years. If so, then you are looking at a boat you can put on a trailer and tow home when not using it.......assuming where you live allows boats on trailers in driveways.....

You might want to check out discoverboating.com. Its a good site, has lots of information about financing, insurance etc. It also has some cool gadgets to help you figure out the best type of boat for you. Another place to check is portal.channelblade.com; they have a ton of boat brochures online, and boats to search once you figure out what you want. Boating is a ton of fun if you have the right boat for your needs! Good luck

This can all vary incredibly. I've purchased sailboats costing anywhere from $2K used to $120K new, and they can get much, much more expensive than that.

Insurance costs and availability will depend on many things. If it's a smaller boat, used locally, you may be able to add it to a homeowners policy which is probably the cheapest option. However for larger boats or cruising away from home, you will likely need to purchase a stand alone policy.

The price of these can also vary greatly depending on the value of the boat, the liability coverage you desire, the deductible you select and the boating area you are covered for.

The other big costs typically associated with boat ownership include dockage (or storage on the hard) and maintenance.
