In (South) Florida, what is the difference, if any, between getting a certification of completion of a boater safety course and getting your boaters license? And if there is a difference, other than insurance and possible discounts when purchasing a boat, what is the purpose of the boater safety course? Thanks!!

A boaters safety course gives the knowledge you need to safely operate a boat on open waters. Thus, you learn how to read the channel markers, navigational signs and the does and don’ts when on the water.Failure to gain that knowledge puts you and your guests on your craft at danger and possible loss of the life of someone else.boaters license is only needed for very large craft for commercial use or paying guests as profit

are you aware that there is such a thing as “rules of the road” for operating a boat — I mean traffic rules just like for cars?
Many people aren’t — that’s the primary reason for the boater’s safety course. Killing somebody’s family can really ruin an otherwise pleasant day on the lake.

Florida Boating Safety Education I.D. Card is what you get when you complete the safety course. All boaters 21 years old and younger, operating a PWC or a power boat of 10 hp or more is required to have passed an approved boater education course. Once an operator of a vessel reaches 22 years of age, there are no more restrictions, and they are no longer required to have the card. However, I would encouraged everyone to obtain the card regardless of their age in order to increase their knowledge of boating safety and be eligible for marine insurance discounts.
Good Luck and Boat Safe!
